
FIJI’s newly appointed High Commissioner to the Republic of India, His Excellency Mr Jagnnath Sami. The discussions revolved around the various cultural similarities between both nations and also a bonding between its people.

Indian relations are very strategically aligned and such a commitment reflects India’s approach to international cooperation, ensuring that support is aligned with the needs of Fiji. The development cooperation is based on three fundamental principles: equality, mutual respect, and freedom of choice.
India’s links with Fiji commenced in 1879 when Indian labourers were brought here under indenture system to work on sugar-cane plantations.
The bilateral relationship received a major boost after the visit of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to Fiji in November 2014, when the First Meeting of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Co-operation (FIPIC) was also held. Over the years, as a major development partner of Fiji, India has been privileged to support Fiji in its nation’s building efforts across key sectors and also in the area of capacity building.
Hon’ble EAM, Dr. S. Jaishankar visited Fiji from 14-17 February 2023 to attend the 12th World Hindi Conference held in Nadi, Fiji, from 15-17 February. Fiji has become one of the first Founding Members of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) – a joint initiative of the Governments of India and France to promote solar energy.
In 2021 Government of India has established a Centre of Excellence in IT at Fiji National University. The project has been implemented by Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) under an MoU signed between the Governments of India and Fiji.
Delegation of investors from the Indian Economic Trade Organization IETO are slated to visit Fiji at an appropriate time advised by the High Commissioner in India.
