Prof. Dr. Srinivasan: Pioneering AYUSH for Africa’s Health
Prof. Dr. A.V. Srinivasan, Founder and Chairman of the Sri Paripoorna Sanathana Charitable Trust, has taken on the role of AYUSH Commissioner for Africa under the India Africa Trade Council, with a clear mission to bring India’s traditional systems of medicine—Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy—to the heart of the African continent. Africa, with its fast-growing population, rising lifestyle-related health challenges, and limited access to quality healthcare, presents a strong case for the preventive, affordable, and holistic health solutions that AYUSH offers.
Since its inception in 2012, the Sri Paripoorna Sanathana Charitable Trust has been a model of service, innovation, and compassion, running a 60-bed charitable hospital, an accredited Ayurvedic medical college, and residential facilities for the elderly and special-needs children. It has driven integrative medicine research, worked closely with institutions like ICMR, and created the Sri Paripoorna Sanathana International Wellness Centre—a 13,000 sq ft hub that unites ancient healing traditions with modern science. This centre, inaugurated in the presence of dignitaries from Lesotho and other nations, reflects the growing international interest in AYUSH, including from Africa.
Africa’s own connection to traditional medicine is deep-rooted, yet in many countries, these practices remain unregulated or inaccessible to the wider population. By introducing evidence-based AYUSH practices under the India Africa Trade Council’s framework, Prof. Dr. Srinivasan aims to strengthen Africa’s healthcare landscape without replacing its heritage. Structured AYUSH wellness centres can become focal points for community health education, wellness tourism, and herbal medicine production, while also generating employment. Training local practitioners will ensure that AYUSH therapies are delivered professionally and sustainably, reaching both urban and rural populations.
Under the India Africa Trade Council, this initiative can also open new avenues for trade in herbal products, AYUSH-based pharmaceuticals, and wellness services, encouraging joint ventures and local manufacturing in Africa. Telemedicine will enable remote communities to access Indian AYUSH experts, while research partnerships can explore the synergies between African medicinal plants and AYUSH formulations, creating unique healthcare solutions tailored for the continent.
As AYUSH Commissioner for Africa, Prof. Dr. Srinivasan’s vision is to create a lasting healthcare bridge—one that blends India’s ancient wellness wisdom with Africa’s healthcare aspirations, nurtures people-to-people connections, and drives mutual growth. Through the India Africa Trade Council’s platform, AYUSH will not just be a healthcare system—it will become a collaborative movement that promotes health, prosperity, and holistic wellbeing across both regions.
