The Indian Economic Trade Organization (IETO), in collaboration with the India ASEAN Trade Council, led a high-level trade delegation to Malaysia ahead of the ASEAN Summit. With Malaysia assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, this strategic visit served as a timely initiative to boost India’s economic engagement with ASEAN and reinforce its role as a vital trade partner in Southeast Asia.
A key highlight of the visit was the meeting with the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA), a prominent political and economic body in Malaysia. Constructive discussions were held to promote mutual trade, expand cooperation in the halal industry, technology, fashion, logistics, and food exports, and explore the integration of Indian businesses into Malaysia’s rapidly expanding regional ecosystem.

Datuk Ilr Lawrence Low, Chairman of MCA and Member of Parliament, stated:
“Malaysia looks forward to working closely with India in building stronger trade relations through platforms like IETO. Together, we can shape new economic realities for ASEAN and India that are based on mutual respect, trust, and opportunity.”
The centerpiece of the visit was a Business-to-Business (B2B) meeting with the help of Ms Melissa Tan, which received an overwhelming response from the Malaysian, Chinese, and Indian business communities. The event was graced by several eminent guests including Datuk Lawrence Low, Mr. Santhosh Kumar, Hon. Trade Commissioner for Malaysia under the India Commonwealth Trade Council, and Dr. Asif Iqbal, Global President of IETO.
Mr. Santhosh Kumar remarked, “This engagement sets the stage for Commonwealth economies to better align with ASEAN and Indian interests, especially in emerging sectors like logistics and technology. Malaysia is proud to lead this effort into the next decade.”
Dr. Asif Iqbal shared, “Malaysia holds the key to unlocking India’s greater economic integration with ASEAN. This mission has laid the foundation for deeper partnerships, real trade collaborations, and people-driven diplomacy that will define the future of India-ASEAN engagement.”

The event also saw participation from several notable representatives of the Asian Arab Chamber of Commerce, including Dr. Majid Talikoti, Dr. Shiraz, Mr. Aslam Khan, an internationally acclaimed fashion designer, and Mr. Asif Dalwai, who contributed their expertise toward building trilateral trade engagement between India, Arab nations, and ASEAN. Their presence highlighted the increasingly integrated trade vision across Asia and the Arab world.
Several Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) were signed during the visit:
– Between IETO and the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) for strengthening bilateral commercial and cultural cooperation.
– Between the India ASEAN Trade Council and BRICS ASEAN Chamber, enabling stronger trilateral cooperation and cross-border trade facilitation.
– With a prominent Food & Beverage company, focusing on scaling halal-certified exports and integrating Indian food processing into ASEAN markets.
The IETO team also engaged in parallel meetings with DMY Group, led by Mr. Farouq, to explore developments in security systems and smart infrastructure. A visit to Port Klang, one of Southeast Asia’s largest ports, laid the groundwork for improved maritime logistics and cargo operations between India and Malaysia. In addition, meetings with stakeholders at Malaysia’s Halal Hub provided insights into certification, export facilitation, and global halal economy integration.
Discussions with the women-led Mislady Group opened up new avenues for collaboration in fashion, wellness, and cross-border women entrepreneurship — a testament to IETO’s inclusive trade diplomacy approach.
The delegation’s visit to Malaysia was more than symbolic — it was a blueprint for strategic partnerships, industry collaboration, and regional economic advancement. With Malaysia preparing to lead ASEAN, this mission reinforced India’s position as a committed partner in the region’s development and prosperity.
